Rider Sweeps MAAC Diving Awards, Funk MAAC Swimmer of the Week
LAWRENCEVILLE--The Rider University swimming and diving teams had three athletes recognized by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tuesday afternoon.
Sophomore Johnny Funk earned MAAC Male Swimmer of the Week, senior Tom Smallwood was named MAAC Male Diver of the Week and senior Aisley Carter was awarded MAAC Female Diver of the Week recognition for all competition January 31-February 6.
Funk, from Las Vegas, Nevada (Southeast Career & Tech. Academy), won the 200 IM (1:56.71) and led off the winning 400 medley relay (3:35.65) as Rider defeated Lafayette 58-48 in the final meet of the regular season.
"It always feels great to be recognized by the conference," Funk said. "And in terms of expectations for the team heading into MAACs, we as a team, have trained exceptionally hard this past season and we expect to do great."
"Johnny is often not given the credit he deserves as a performer, but his teammates and coaches know his 'hard work' attitude well from his daily training effort," said head coach Steve Fletcher. "He loves a challenge and thrives on the grind of everyday hard work."
Smallwood, from Sayville, New York (Sayville High), won the one-meter dive (273.75) against the Leopards.
"I am really proud of winning the honor," said Smallwood who is a Finance and Economics double major. "I have always wanted to win MAAC Diver of the Week since freshman year and I am extremely excited that I finally did. I am also proud to win the award the same week as Aisley being the two seniors on the team. This is a great confidence booster heading into MAACs and I am thrilled to compete to my fullest next week."
Carter, from Clarksburg, Maryland (Walter Johnson High) won the one-meter (242.25) and three-meter dive (260.47) as the Rider women defeated Lafayette 108-106.
"As a coach, having your two seniors honored in this way in their last dual meet is such a great accomplishment," said diving coach Kristen Ceppa. "Tom and Aisley have been working hard in practice and it's showing in the meets. Those two have been true to our program and our philosophy from day one and it's great to see them finish up the dual meet season like this."
This is third time this season that Carter has earned MAAC recognition (November 16 and January 18). Funk was honored for the second time this season having been recognized by the MAAC on November 16.
Rider competes at the MAAC Championships in Buffalo, New York February 17-19 at Erie Community College with Niagara University and Canisius College serving as the host schools.
