M. Basketball

Junior Harris Mansell (Cheltenham, PA/Cheltenham) scored 21 points, seven in overtime, and sophomore Ryan Thompson (Mt. Laurel/Lenape) added 20 points, to lead Rider to a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory over Iona Monday night. The victory was the fifth in a row for Rider and eighth in the last 10 games. Mansell made a three-point field goal to give Rider a 61-58 lead with 3:41 left in the extra period.  That was the seventh and final lead change of the game.  Mansell’s two foul shots with 12.9 seconds remaining gave the Broncs a 66-61 lead. Ryan Thompson scored a lay-up at the buzzer to send the game into overtime, tied at 56-56. Iona’s Gary Springer made one of two foul shots with 5.5 seconds left for a 56-54 Iona lead.  Iona scored with 23 seconds left in regulation to take a 55-54 lead. Rider trailed 53-50 before senior Jason Thompson (Mt. Laurel/Lenape) scored a lay up and Mansell made two foul shots to take a 54-53 lead with 1:24 left, Rider’s first lead since half time.

Despite 18 points from sophomore Tammy Meyers (Willingboro) and 17 points from senior Janele Henderson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin), the Broncs lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at Manhattan Monday night.  Trailing by 17 with 18 minutes left in the game, the Broncs used a 17-9 run, six points by Meyers to get within nine at 54-45 with 10 minutes remaining. Meyers added five rebounds in 35 minutes of action, going a perfect three for three from three-point range. Trailing 70-58 with two minutes left, Rider went on a 5-0 run, three points by freshman Cintella Spotwood (Trenton/Trenton Central) cutting the Jasper lead to seven with 40 seconds left before the Manhattan sealed the game at the free throw line.  Spotwood finished with seven points in 15 minutes of play.

Wrestling

The Broncs swept Campbell and Binghamton on day two of the CAA Duals hosted this weekend by George Mason.  Senior 197 T.J. Morrison (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff) won both his matches by fall with junior 184 Doug Umbehauer (Shamong/Lenape) also winning by fall and major decision. Senior 149 Don Fisch (Williamstown/Delsea) won by fall in 15 seconds against Bob Matthews of Campbell and upset number one ranked Kyle Fried of Binghamton 7-2.  Fried entered the weekend 13th ranked in the nation at 149.  Fisch finished last season fifth in the nation at 141, earning All-American honors and recently picked up his 100th career win. Junior 165 Jason Laphram (West Chazy, N.Y./Beekmantown/Penn State), freshman 125 Ilyass Elmsaouri (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff), junior 133 Zac Cunliffe (Farmingdale/Howell) and junior heavyweight Ed Bordas (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley Central/Binghamton) also posted two wins on Saturday for Rider.

In the final home meet of the 2007-08 season, junior Josh Rosenbluth (Lawrence) won the 100 back (52.62), 200 back (1:56.77) and 200 IM (1:58.38), freshman Drew Modrov (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) won the 50 free (21.62) and 100 free (47.72) and senior diver Dylan Korn (Hawthorne, N.Y./Westlake) won the one-meter (289.87) and three-meter (281.40). For the women, freshman Brianna Burns (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y./Spring Valley) won the 50 free (24.73), 100 free (53.07) and 200 free (1:55.06), junior Priscilla Modrov (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) won the 100 butterfly (56.98), 200 butterfly (2:04.12) and 200 IM (2:10.26), sophomore Kellyanne Tomasula (Sussex, N.J./Vernon Township) won the 100 back (59.09) and 200 back (2:10.08) and junior diver Amanda Burke (Churchville, Pa./William Tennent) won the one-meter (260.62) and the three-meter (297.30).

Track & Field

The Broncs competed in the NYC Gotham Cup Friday night, held at the 168th Street Armory. For the Rider women, junior Kelly Kajunski (Glenmore, Pa./Downington East) qualified for the ECAC Championships in the high jump (5’7”), placing third.  The men’s 4 x 800m relay of freshman Peter Wandell (State College, Pa./State College), senior Ryan Donohue (Freehold), freshman Mike Soroko (Kinnelon) and senior Jeff Stead (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury) placed third (7:56.79). Sophomore Kevin Breen (Langhorne, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) placed fifth in the pole vault (14’ 9”).  Sophomore Phil Capaldi (Woxall, Pa./Souderton) placed fifth in the 5,000m (15:53.44), junior Kelly Wojciehowski (Fair Haven) placed seventh in the 5,000 (18:56.87) and freshman Chelsea Callan (Hazlet/Raritan) placed seventh in the mile (5:16.09).
