WILLIAMSBURG -- The Rider men's and women's and track and field teams competed in day two of competition in the Colonial Relays, held in Williamsburg, Va.
"We had a lot of really great performances," said head coach Bob Hamer. "I was really excited about today's results. We came here and had a really good day yesterday. One of the things we tell our athletes is to emulate your performances you did the day before or if you didn't have a great day come back and do something better. I think we accomplished that in a lot of areas."
For the Rider men, sophomore David Hightower (Easton, Pa./Easton) finished second in the 110m hurdles (14.69), with that being an IC4A qualifying time, sophomore James Burroughs (West Orange) placed eighth in the 110m hurdles (15.21), sophomore Perry Asare (Lindenwood) finished eighth in the triple jump (13.88m) and freshman Matthew Millemann (Hillsborough) placed ninth in the 110m hurdles (15.34).
"I thought Dave had a shot to win," Hamer said. "He just wasn't able to extend himself over the last couple of hurdles. He ran a really nice race and had a really nice time given the conditions that we had."
The DMR relay of senior Christian Gonzalez (Somerset/Franklin Twp.), sophomore Dave Brown (Ewing), freshman Matt Sampson (Manasquan) and senior Michael Soroko (Kinnelon) finished fourth with a time of 10:00.96.
For the Rider women, sophomore Mia Riley (West Caldwell/James Caldwell) finished tied for sixth in the 100m (12.77).
The 4x200m relay team of senior Shaylah Counts Newark, N.J. (Malcolm Shabazz), senior Jillian Rubbico (Plains, Pa./Coughlin), sophomore Erin McMullin (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) and sophomore Ashley Hunter (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) finished seventh with a time of 1:44.78, breaking the old Rider record that had been held since 1997.
"It was great," said Hamer. "It was one of those things that I wanted to talk to them about, but they were already talking about it. It was great that they were trying to accomplish good things. They have worked really hard to get to where they are."
Also for the Bronc men Saturday, the 4x100m relay team of Asare, Hightower, Burroughs and Freshman Wilvenson Baptiste (Irvington) placed fifth with a time of 42.42. The time is an IC4A qualifier.
The 4x200m relay of Asare, Baptiste, sophomore Nick Dorkin (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff, N.Y.) and Millemann finished tenth with a time of 1:31.78.
Also for the Bronc women Saturday, the 4x100m relay team of Counts, Riley, Rubbico and McMullin placed sixth in 48.52.
The DMR relay of sophomore Paige McAtee (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa), sophomore Jordyn Horning (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley), junior Laura Staples (Horsham, Pa./Appalachian State/Hatboro-Horsham) and sophomore Erin Fitzgibbons(Sayreville) finished seventh with a time of 12:56.36.
The Broncs will compete next when they host the Rider Invitational next weekend, April 9.
"It is a meet that is a little more low key, then the meet this weekend," Hamer said about coming home to compete next weekend. "It will give our athletes a chance to rebound in some events. We have to work on some things and it will give them a chance to do that. This is definitely going to be something that will help us down the road."
