WILSON, N.C.--The Broncs split a doubleheader with Saint Bonaventure Saturday at historic Fleming Stadium.

"We're doing a lot of good things," said Rider head coach Barry Davis, whose team has taken two of the first three games with the Bonnies.  "You can't win them all. It is hard to beat team three straight times."

For Rider (8-5) junior Jerry Mulderig (Langhorne, PA/Council Rock South) had five hits on the day. "That's a good day," Davis said.

Junior Nick Crescenzo (Hammonton) had three hits on the day.

In the first game, with five sophomores and two freshmen in the starting line up, the Broncs broke a 3-3 tie in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Crescenzo. Crescenzo and Mulderig each had two of Rider's seven hits.

A two-run, two-out Bonnie home run in the fourth inning tied the score at 3-3.

Rider sophomore Eric Strano (Robbinsville) hit an RBI single in the second inning to give Rider a 3-0 lead, scoring Crescenzo, who singled and stole second.

St. Bonaventure (4-8) cut the lead to 3-1 in the third inning with a run on a walk and two hits.

Rider scored two runs in the first inning on three hits, including a double by sophomore Justin Thomas (Richboro, PA/Council Rock South) and an RBI single by senior Adam Wayman (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial).

Rider sophomore righty Kurt Sowa (Bensalem, PA/Fr. Judge) started and pitched four innings, allowing three runs on four hits and four walks while striking out four. With the win Sowa improves to 3-1 on the season, 8-5 in his career.

Sophomore Zach Mawson (Magnolia, DE/Caesar Rodney) pitched the seventh inning for the save, his fourth. Mawson has now pitched 5.2 innings in six games and has yet to allow a run.

In the second game, Mulderig had three of Rider's six hits. His RBI double to the wall in the seventh inning cut the lead to 6-4. "That was a big hit at the end," Davis said. "That gave us a chance. That ball goes over the wall we have a tie game."

Rider cut the lead to 4-2 in the fourth inning on a two-run single by freshman James Locklear (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert). "I'm pleased with the way we battled back," Davis said. "Locklear held his own at the plate and had a real nice play in left field."

The Bonnies took a 4-0 lead with three hits and three walks in the second inning, and went up 6-2 in the fourth inning with a two-run home run. "Can't give up four runs that early in the game," Davis said. "It's hard to win that way."

Rider and St. Bonaventure play the fourth and final game of the series Sunday at 12 noon. "We win tomorrow we win the series (three games to one) and that is what we came down here to do," Davis said. "We have to pitch better."

The Broncs will have 2012 MAAC Pitcher of the Year junior Mike Murphy (Hamilton/Peddie) on the mound. "I feel good about Murph throwing tomorrow," Davis said.
