LOUDONVILLE, NY—The Broncs split a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader at Siena Saturday. Rider had 21 hits in the twin bill. “We swung the bats today,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis.

In the second game junior Mike Murphy (Hamilton/Peddie) pitched five innings, allowing just one earned run on three hits and three walks while striking out four.  “Murph pitched well,” Davis said.  “He pitched out of a jam when he had to in the middle of the game.”

Murphy (5-4) pitched a shutout in his last outing and picks up his 15th career win.

Sophomore Greg Fazio (Far Hills/Ridge) had three hits and four RBI in the second game. Fazio’s third hit of the game, a two-run double in the seventh inning, gave Rider (25-16, 10-4 MAAC) an 8-2 lead.

Fazio hit an RBI single in the fifth inning to give Rider a 5-1 lead and sophomore Mike Parsons (Liverpool, NY) walked and scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning for a 6-1 lead.

Rider took a 4-1 lead with three runs in the fourth inning on two hits, including an RBI single by Fazio on a fake bunt slash play, and an error.

Rider took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a hit and two errors, but Siena (19-23, 10-4 MAAC) came back with a run on a hit, a sacrifice bunt and a Rider error.

Rider junior Jerry Mulderig (Langhorne, PA/Council Rock South) had two of Rider’s nine hits and had five hits on the day.

Junior Nick Crescenzo (Hammonton, NJ/Hammonton) had two hits in the second game and four hits on the day.

In the first game the Broncs out-hit Siena 12-8.

A two-run double by sophomore Justin Thomas (Richboro, PA/Council Rock South) in the eighth inning, his second hit of the game, cut the lead to 7-4. Thomas had three hits on the day.

An RBI double and a two-run home run in the fifth inning gave Siena a 7-2 lead.

Rider scored two runs in the fifth inning on three hits and two Siena errors to cut the lead to 4-2. Parsons had the big hit, an RBI double.

Siena took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a walk, a triple and a ground out and went up 4-0 in the fourth on a two-out walk and a home run.

“They hit some gapers and hit some home runs in the first game,” Davis said of the Saints.  “They are hot right now, playing well.”

Rider senior pitcher Tyler Smith (Westmont/Haddon Twp.) went five innings, allowing seven runs.

Rider won two of the three games with Siena last year in Lawrenceville. The last time Rider traveled to Loudonville Rider lost two of three in 2011.

Rider and Siena have met 54 times since the series began in 1995 with each team having won 27. Rider won all three games against Siena in 2010 and all three at Siena in 2009.

The third game of the series is Sunday at 12 noon. “Tomorrow’s going to be a tough one,” Davis said.
