Gonzalez MAAC Runner of Week Again
LAWRENCEVILLE-- Senior Christian Gonzalez was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Cross Country Runner of the Week for the second straight week.
Gonzalez (Somerset, NJ/Franklin Twp.) finished first overall of 136 runners at the 14-team Fordham Fiasco, covering the 5.0 mile Van Cortlandt Park course in 25:50.1.
Gonzalez led Rider to a second place finish, ahead of host Fordham and Rutgers.
"We've never had an individual winner at an invitational race like this since I've been here (2003)," said head coach Bob Hamer. "This is one of the great days in Rider cross country history."
It was the first time since Rider's Scott Keyser finished first at both the Lafayette Invitational and the Monmouth Invitational in September of 2001.
Gonzalez was also honored by the MAAC after the first week of the season when he finished second of 91 runners at the Lehigh Invitational.
Gonzalez placed fourth at the 2009 IC4A Cross Country Championships last fall and 28th at the NCAA Regional.
Twice an All-MAAC Cross Country runner (12th in 2009, seventh in 2008), Gonzalez twice earned All-East honors in track & field last year, placing sixth in the Indoor mile at the IC4A Championships and fourth in the Outdoor 1500m at the IC4As, qualifying for the NCAA Regional.
