Gardner, Walsh and Wolfe earn March Athletes of the Month
LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – Junior women’s track & field athlete Sara Gardner (Holland Township, NJ/Delaware Valley), junior wrestler Chad Walsh (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) and senior wrestler Ryan Wolfe (New Castle, DE/Caravel Academy) have been named Rider Athletes of the Month for March. Gardner set two new Rider records, while Walsh and Wolfe each earned All-America honors at the NCAA Championships.
At the 2017 MAAC Indoor Championships, Gardner finished second in the 60M hurdles with a new Rider record mark of 8.51. She also finished in a tie for eighth in the high jump, clearing 1.60M at the conference championships. Gardner opened the outdoor season with a first-place finish in the 100M hurdles with a time of 14.18 at the Penn Challenge. After her performance at the Penn Challenge, she was named the MAAC Women’s Track Performer of the Week for the first time in her career. Last weekend, she finished second in the 100M hurdles with a Rider record time of 13.99. She finished just .10 seconds behind the winner and earned eight points for the Broncs.
Both Walsh and Wolfe won their weight classes at the Eastern Wrestling League Championships to punch their tickets to the NCAA Championships. Walsh and Wolfe each won blood round matches to become Head Coach Gary Taylor’s 16th and 17th career All-Americans. The achievement marked the second time in as many years that Walsh has earned the honor. He became the first multiple All-America winner at Rider since Jon Carvalheira in 1998. The accomplishments of Walsh and Wolfe propelled Rider to a 21st-place finish at the NCAA Championships.
