EVANSTON, IL - The Rider University wrestling team took home ninth place out of 42 teams at the 54th annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships on Friday. The Broncs scored 60 team points on the backs of podium finishes by junior Chad Walsh (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) and senior Ryan Wolfe (New Castle, DE/Caravel Academy) to beat out Oklahoma by a narrow 1.5 point margin for ninth.

Walsh began the day with a semifinal victory by 15-5 major decision over unseeded Lorenzo De La Riva of CSU Bakersfield, setting up a matchup with two time defending 157 pound NCAA champion and 1st ranked 165 pound wrestler Isaiah Martinez of Illinois in the finals. Walsh lost in a hard fought 10-6 decision, improving upon his third-place finish from last year with a silver medal.

Wolfe lost his semifinals bout to ninth-ranked and third-seeded Aaron Studebaker of Nebraska, who would go on to win the tournament, by a 3-1 decision, forcing Wolfe into the consolations.

Wolfe would be faced with the challenge of a rematch from day one against 19th-ranked and 10th-seeded Ricky Robertson of Wisconsin. Robertson would prevail in this matchup with a 9-6 decision, placing Wolfe in a battle against fifth-seed Kevin Beazley of Old Dominion, who is ranked 12th at 197. Wolfe would win the match by medical forfeit to take home fifth place and outpace his seven seed.

Sophomore 133-pounder Anthony Cefolo (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park Regional) began the day with a matchup against Eli Stickley of Wisconsin, who would defeat him by 16-0 technical fall to end his tournament. Cefolo went 3-2 in the tournament.

Freshman 141 Evan Fidelibus (Easton, PA/Easton Area) would begin his second day of competition with a victory by fall in 1:39 over Nicholas Villareal of Arizona State. Fidelibus would then lose to seventh-seeded Christopher Carton of Iowa by fall in 2:12 to finish his competition with a record of four wins and two losses in his first Midlands.

Sophomore 174 Dean Sherry (Brick, NJ/Brick Township) opened day two with a matchup against seventh-seeded Ryan Christensen of Wisconsin. Christensen would beat Sherry by fall in 5:38, leaving Sherry with a 2-2 record to end the tournament.

Sophomore 285 Ryan Cloud (Brookville, OH/Northmont) saw his tournament end with a matchup against Mike Kosoy of North Carolina State, who defeated him by 10-2 major decision to move on. Cloud had two wins and two losses at the end of his tournament.

The Broncs next competition will be on Thursday, January 12, when they host the Golden Eagles of Clarion at 6 p.m. in an Eastern Wrestling League matchup.
