Broncs Set Two Rider Records at the Gotham Cup
Staten Island, NY – It was another successful meet for the Rider University track & field team on Friday, as several new school records were set at the Gotham Cup. The one-day event featured many schools from the region and took place at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.
“We had many big performances tonight from several of the athletes,” Head Coach Bob Hamer said.
In the first event of the day, junior Sara Gardner (Holland Township, NJ/Mount St. Mary's/Delaware Valley) finished second in the 60M hurdles with a new Rider-record and ECAC-qualifying time of 8.61 to top her previous best time and Rider record of 8.62.
“Sara has been tremendous all season and that continued today with another record-breaking performance,” Hamer stated. “She needs to continue to raise the bar because there will be some tough competition in the MAAC.”
“I felt like I was able to get out of the blocks efficiently today and the competition in my heat helped pull me to hit 8.61,” Gardner said. “This season for me has been a great one so far, and I have had the opportunity to run with some really great competitors. Coach Harvey really focused on my starts this year and my form over the hurdles, which has made a world of a difference for me this year.”
Gardner also finished in a three-way tie for third in the long jump with teammate Natalie Cowan (Hammonton, NJ/Hammonton). Both Gardner and Cowan posted leaps of 1.65M.
Another Rider record fell on the women’s side in the weight throw with freshman Fidele Jules (Tinton Falls, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) recording a throw of 18.31M to win the event. She bested the second-place finisher, teammate Karoline Sandvig (West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor Plainsboro HS South) by over two meters. The tosses by both Jules and Sandvig qualified for ECAC’s.
“She has been hitting big throws in practice and we knew it was just a matter of time before she hit it in a meet setting,” Hamer said. “She beat a really good record of ours with a big last throw. She had two throws over 18 meters today and she still has some room for improvement. She is a great kid who still has a lot of great accomplishments ahead of her.”
“Before it was time to throw, weight Coach SanFilippo was just as excited as I was for it, but I had to remain calm throughout,” Jules added. “I was not planning to throw the school record today. I still can't believe it happened. I did well today because I took the time to focus on technique and put all of my effort in.”
On the men’s side, sophomore Marcell Brown (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) finished third in the shot put with an IC4A-quality throw of 16.11M. The mark was the second-best in school history and set a new personal record for Brown.
“Marcell was great in the shot put,” Hamer added. “He is such a dedicated, hardworking athlete and it was very exciting to see him put a throw out over 16 meters today. We always work so hard for that big breakthrough and he had that today.”
Sophomore Nate Bowie (Matawan, NJ/Matawan) had a strong showing for the Broncs as well finishing second in the 60M hurdles with an IC4A-qualifying time of 8.20.
“We had some decent efforts today in many areas, but we still need to improve in many areas if we expect to contend in the MAAC,” Hamer added. “We are really focused on doing well at the Terrier Classic next weekend in Boston so we are hopeful that we will make some big strides at that meet. Today will give us some confidence moving forward, but we must not waste really good opportunities when they present themselves.”
The Broncs return to action on Friday, January 27, traveling to Boston, Massachusetts to compete in the two-day John Thomas Terrier Classic.
