New York, NY – The Rider University track and field team opened the 2017 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Indoor Championships on Saturday at the 168th Street Armory. Rider and conference records fell for both the Bronc men and women on the opening day.

The two-day event runs February 18-19.

“We had a great day one for us today,” Rider University Head Coach Bob Hamer said. “We really outperformed our seedings in many areas and we put ourselves in position to battle for the team title on Day two. I was really proud of the way the team stepped up in many areas today and performed as well as we had hoped coming into the championship.

Freshman Asia Young (Pleasantville, NJ/Holy Spirit) had a big day for the Broncs, winning the long jump with a leap of 6.01M.

“Young was very impressive with winning the long jump on her last jump,” Hamer added. “The Manhattan athlete passed her on her second to last jump and then Asia responded on her final jump. We spoke to the team about never giving up and finding a way and that embodied that mantra tonight. She also broke her own Rider record with that jump.”

On the men’s side, junior Tyree Adams was also victorious in the long jump with a mark of 7.55M.

“Adams also stepped up with a big time long jump win,” Hamer noted.” He has really come along the last two meets and had a great long jump tonight.  He broke one of the longest standing Rider records with that jump.”

In the dash and hurdle events, Rider excelled as well.

“The dash and hurdles athletes had a great day one with Sara Gardner leading the charge by breaking the Rider record yet again in stage hurdles,” Hamer said. “The hurdles needed to be a big event for us and they really performed at a very high level today.”

Junior Sara Gardner (Holland Township, NJ/Mount St. Mary's/Delaware Valley) took first in the 60M hurdles with a time of 8.60. It marked the third time this season that Gardner has beaten her own University record. Sophomore Tierra Taylor (Browns Mills, NJ/Pemberton) had a strong showing for the Broncs, tying the Manhattan athlete for the meet record in the 60M dash and breaking the Rider record with a mark of 7.57.  It is lining up to be an exciting final tomorrow in that event.

Senior Megan McGarrity (Philadelphia, PA/St. Basil's Academy) performed well for Rider on day one, winning the 5,000M with a time of 17:29.71.

“McGarrity executed the race plan perfectly and then really wound it up over the last 1,000 meters to get the win,” Hamer added.

Other overall highlights from the opening day of action are below:
Meet record - Tierra Taylor - 60m 7.57
Rider records - Gardner 60M hurdles 8.60, Young long jump 6.01m, Adams long jump 7.55m, Taylor 60m 7.57

“We are very excited for the second day of the meet and we are carrying a lot of momentum into Sunday,” said.
