Rider Inks Three For 2017-18 Season

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – Rider University Track and Field Head Coach Bob Hamer has announced the written commitments of three incoming student-athletes for next year. Joshonda Johnson (Absegami High School), Kelsey Cummings (Triton Regional High School) and Sydney Del Vecchio (Parkland High School, PA) will join the Broncs for the 2017-18 season.

Johnson will compete for Rider in sprint and hurdle events. Some of her notable accomplishments from her high school career include, 2016 New Jersey Group State Runner- up - 400 hurdles, 2016 New Jersey Meet of Champions 4th place- 400m, 2016 Cape Atlantic League Champion- 400 hurdles, 2016 Atlantic County Champion- 400 hurdles, 2016 Sectional Champion- 400m, 2016 New Jersey Meet of Champions 4th place- 400m, 2016 Cape Atlantic League Champion- 100 hurdles and 2016 Atlantic County Champion- 100 hurdles.

“Joshonda is a standout hurdler, jumper, and sprinter who will make an immediate impact in the MAAC and the ECAC.  She has the ability to be a very special athlete in our program.  She will add to the collection of very talented women in those event groups that we have recruited over the last few years to the program that we hope will lead us to a MAAC Championship,” Hamer said of Johnson.

Cummings is a distance runner who will look to make a splash for the Broncs. Some of her notable accomplishments from the past year are: New Jersey Meet of Champions 8th place - 1600m, Tri-County Champion - 1600m, Tri County Champion - 3200m, Olympic Conference Champion- 1600m and New Jersey Group 3 State 4th place- 1600m.

“Kelsey had a standout track season last year and she is one of the most accomplished distance runners that we have recruited to the program.  She has the desire and ability to be the next big standout for the distance program,” Hamer added.

Del Vecchio will also be a distance runner for Rider. Some of her notable accomplishments from the high school are: PIAA State Cross Country Qualifier, Nike Cross Country Northeast Regional Qualifier and PIAA District III Championships - 14th place - 1600m.

“I am very excited about Sydney's commitment to Rider.  She has the ability to come in and make an immediate impact to the cross country and distance programs.  She has a lot of enthusiasm, passion and excitement about her running and she will be a great addition to the Broncs.  We have a very strong nucleus of young distance runners that we hope will bring the program back to the Top-three in MAAC cross country and distance running,” Hamer noted.
