RIVERDALE, NYKamila Hoskova (Brno, Czech Republic/Sportovni Gymnazium Ludvika Danka) scored a season-high 23 points on 10-of-11 shooting and Julia Duggan (Marmora, NJ/Ocean City) added her third double-double of the year with 11 points and a season-high tying 15 rebounds as the Rider University women’s basketball team sprinted past Manhattan, 53-36, Thursday evening at Draddy Gymnasium. The Broncs (10-4, 4-1 MAAC) started the game on a 12-0 run, led by as many as 21 points in the first half and led wire-to-wire for the fifth time this season to cruise to the victory over the Jaspers (5-9, 1-4 MAAC). The 36 points allowed are the fewest in the Lynn Milligan era and the least allowed by Rider since it held St. Francis Brooklyn to 26 in the 1995-96 season.

“That’s one to be proud of, no doubt,” said Milligan of her team’s 6-2 road mark this season. “MAAC road wins are always very difficult to come by. We’re happy to walk out of here with a ‘W.’ It was a difficult game, not one of our better games. I thought we did some really good things on both ends of the floor, but I thought our consistency was off tonight. I have to credit Manhattan for that. They thought they wanted to take the air out of the ball and slow things down tonight and I think they did that. We came up with some good looks and Kami made some big shots when we needed it.”

Robin Perkins (Willingboro, NJ/Trenton Catholic [Saint Francis Univ.]) also added nine points, while Stella Johnson (Denville, NJ/Morris Catholic) contributed a season-high seven assists to go along with four points and six rebounds. The Broncs finished with 17 assists, while turning the ball over just 11 times. Rider held Manhattan to just 25.5 percent (14-55) shooting from the floor.

No Manhattan player scored more than six points, with Kayla Grimme and Nyasha Irizarry both accomplishing the feat. Irizarry and Julie Hoier each grabbed six rebounds.

Led by four points from Perkins, the Broncs began the game on a 12-0 run and, after Manhattan scored six-straight points, added another 10-straight points to push the lead to 16. Hoskova scored the first eight points of the run on 3-for-3 shooting, including 2-for-2 from long range. A Duggan free throw at the 2:09 mark of the second quarter pushed the advantage to 21 points, 29-8, before Manhattan got a Gabby Cajou lay-up to make it 29-10 Broncs at the break.

Hoskova finished the first half with 14 points on 6-of-6 shooting and 2-for-2 from long range. Duggan added five points and 10 rebounds, while Perkins and Johnson had four points each. Johnson also dished out five first-half assists. Irizarry and Taylor Williams had three points apiece to lead Manhattan. Grimme grabbed four rebounds for Manhattan, which was limited to 16.7 percent (4-24) shooting.

A fairly evenly-played third quarter left the Broncs’ lead at 19, 41-22, after three quarters and the closest the Jaspers would get was to within 15, 49-34, with just under five minutes left in regulation.

For the game, the Broncs outshot the Jaspers, 38.5 percent (20-52) to 25.5 percent (14-55) from the floor and 23.5 percent (4-17) to 13.0 percent (3-23) from long range. Both teams grabbed 39 rebounds, with the Broncs taking a 30-18 edge in points in the paint.

The Broncs return to action Sunday, when they travel to Siena. Opening tip from the Alumni Recreation Center in Loudonville, NY, is slated for 2 p.m.
