POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – Robin Perkins (Willingboro, NJ/Trenton Catholic [Saint Francis Univ.]) scored a game-high 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting and Julia Duggan (Marmora, NJ/Ocean City) recorded her third straight double-double thanks to a 12-point, 13-rebound performance to lead the Rider University women’s basketball team past Marist, 69-56, on Thursday evening at McCann Arena. The Broncs (12-4, 6-1 MAAC) snapped a 27-game losing streak against the Red Foxes (7-10, 4-3 MAAC). The win was the first for Rider in Poughkeepsie since January of 2002.

“It has been a year of firsts for us this season,” Head Coach Lynn Milligan said. “Today at shoot around, Robin Perkins came up to me and said ‘Coach this is going to be another first’. To win MAAC games is hard enough, but to be able to go on the road and pick up tough wins like this speaks to this team’s mental toughness. Our non-conference road swings early in the season helped us and its showing in our play thus far in league play. In order to be a good team you need to win road games and right now we are doing that.”

Perkins scored in double figures for her team-leading 12th time this season despite being in foul trouble. The senior guard connected on 3-of-7 from beyond the arc and pulled down five rebounds. Duggan’s double-double was her fifth of 2016-17. Kamila Hoskova (Brno, Czech Republic/Sportovni Gymnazium Ludvika Danka) chipped in nine points for the guests, while Taylor Wentzel (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) contributed four points and a game-high six assists.

It was a balanced attack for Marist as four players scored in double figures, led by Claire Oberdorf with 16 points. Forward Maura Fitzpatrick poured in 13 points on 5-of-12 shooting. Hannah Hand added 10 points for the Red Foxes and Lovi Henningsdottir netted 11 courtesy of hitting all four of her attempts from the free-throw line.

Rider pulled away from Marist in the fourth quarter, outscoring the home team, 16-10, in the final 10 minutes. The Broncs stretched their lead to as many as 15 late in the contest following a trey from Lexi Posset (Pittsburgh, PA/Beaver Area) with under three minutes to play. In the fourth, the Broncs were able to keep Marist off balance with their aggressive defensive play.

The Red Foxes opened the game on a 5-0 run over the first two minutes of play, as the Broncs turned the ball over on two of their first three possessions. Rider came racing back and an acrobatic tip in from Perkins pulled Rider to within one at 7-6 with midway through the first frame. Several minutes later, the guests took their first lead of the day courtesy of an offensive board and put back from Duggan. Senior forward Yeliz Dogan (Izmir, Turkey/Antalya Koleji) capped the scoring in the first quarter with a left-handed hook shot in the paint to give Rider a 21-19 edge heading into the second.

The Bronc defense clamped down in the second, holding the potent Marist attack to just 11 points on 18 percent shooting. During the stanza, Rider allowed just three Marist made field goals and forced three Red Fox turnovers. After an 8-0 Marist tied the contest at 30 with 3:51 left, the Broncs ended the half on a 5-0 run to take a 35-30 advantage into the break.

Coming out of halftime, the Broncs stretched their lead back to eight at 42-34 following back-to-back offensive rebounds and lay ups from Duggan. Marist would not back down as the hosts answered with a 7-0 run over a two-minute span to pull within one at 42-41 with four and a half to play in the third. Rider ended the run courtesy of three-pointer from the wing by freshman guard Safie Tolusso (Vezey, Switzerland/Honore d’Estinne d’Orves) to make it a four-point game. The guests closed the third strong to take a seven-point lead into the fourth with Perkins capping the scoring in the quarter with a deep three-pointer to make it 53-46 Rider.

The Rider bench outscored the Marist reserves, 20-0 and the Broncs held a 6-0 edge in fastbreak points. Rider shot 43.5 percent from the field (27-62), while Marist hit just over 30 percent (19-63) of its shots from the field. The normally potent Marist three-point attack was held to just 21 percent (4-19) shooting. The Broncs had 18 assists on 27 made baskets and outrebounded the Red Foxes, 43-35.

The Broncs return to action on Saturday, January 14, with a home conference clash versus Fairfield. Opening tip from Alumni Gym in Lawrenceville, NJ, is slated for 2 p.m.
