Rider at Lafayette 7-Way
EASTON, PA-The Broncs began the outdoor season Sunday at the Lafayette 7-Way Meet. The Rider men placed second and the Rider women finished fifth. "We had a lot of really good things happen today,' said Rider head coach Bob Hamer. "A lot of kids had PRs (personal records). It was a cold day but the weather held out for us."
For the Rider women junior Mia Riley (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) won the 100m (12.12) and the 200m (25.55) and senior Heather Giovagnoli (Royersford, Pa./Spring Ford) won the 3,000m in a Rider record time of 9:59.83.
For the Rider men, freshman George Solujich (East Windsor, NJ/Notre Dame) won the shot put (49'9") and won the discus (156'5"), and qualified for the IC4A in the discus. Junior James Burroughs (West Orange) won the 110 hurdles (14.46) and the 400m intermediate hurdles (55.0), qualifying for the IC4A in the 110 hurdles.
Freshman Jonathan Galya (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Twp.) won the high jump (6'6.75").
Junior David Hightower (Easton, Pa./Easton) also qualified for the IC4A in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.59, finishing second.
Sophomore Lauryn Strebeck (Dayton, OH/South Brunswick) placed second in the triple jump (36'2"), junior Krista Musinski (West Pittston, PA/Wyoming Area) placed third in the triple jump (33'9.25"), freshman Ashley Edwards (Westfield, NJ) placed fourth in the 400m (1:00.22), junior Erin Fitzgibbons (Sayreville) placed fourth in the 3,000m steeplechase (11:38.81) and freshman Leonora Paul (Hackensack, NJ) placed fourth in the shot put (38'2.75").
Sophomore Chris McGovern (Old Bridge, N.J. /St. John Vianney) placed second in the javelin (58.11m) and third in the discus (43.67m) and junior Greg Smith (Milford, NJ/Delaware Valley) placed second in the long jump (6.55m).
Junior Jorge Merino (Old Bridge) placed third in the shot put (15.06m), sophomore Matthew Millemann (Hillsborough) placed third in the 110m hurdles (15.09) and third in the 400m hurdles (55.50) and sophomore Wilvenson Baptiste (Irvington) placed third in the 200m (22.07).
Sophomore Corey O'Neil (Old Bridge, N.J. /Old Bridge) placed fourth in the 3,000m steeplechase (9:46.47), freshman Joe Vicini (Millstone, N.J. /Notre Dame) placed fourth in the hammer throw (43.90m), freshman Andrew Pozo (Forked River, N.J. /Toms River HS South) placed fifth in the hammer (43.27m) and senior Adam Haun (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) placed fifth in the high jump (1.80m).
Sophomore Jeana Sabatini (Levittown, PA/Conwell-Egan) placed fifth in the triple jump (33'1"), junior Ashley Hunter (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) placed fifth in the 400m hurdles (1:07.94), junior Megan Elgin (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) placed fifth in the 1500 (4:48.18) and sophomore Rhea Phipps (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) placed fifth in the hammer (153'7").
Sophomore Corina Santiago (Ewing/Notre Dame) placed sixth in the javelin (102'3"), freshman Nitessa Brooks (Somerset, NJ/Franklin) placed sixth in the shot put (37'7.75") and freshman Sydney Grimes (West Orange, NJ) placed seventh in the hammer (149'3").
"We need to use this as a stepping stone," Hamer said.
Rider travels to Williamsburg, VA next weekend for the Colonial Relays. "We're excited about seeing some new competition at a high-level invitational," Hamer said. "We're hopeful that we'll get some great results."
