Softball Defeats Lamar, Edged By UT Arlington Saturday

Burroughs goes 3-for-6 with two runs scored

ARLINGTON, TX Olivia Burroughs (Escondido, CA/San Pasqual) went 3-for-6 and scored both of the Broncs' runs on the day as the Rider University softball team defeated Lamar, 1-0, and fell to UT Arlington, 2-1 in eight innings, Saturday at the Boerner Invitational. With the split, the Broncs move to 3-6, while the Cardinals fell to 6-17 and the Mavericks are now 9-10.

In the first game against Lamar, the two teams played the first six and a half innings scoreless, before the Broncs struck for the walk-off win in the bottom of the seventh. Burroughs led off with an infield single, before moving to third on an error. She then scored the game on Jadeyn Merrill's (Lamesa, TX/Lamesa) walk-off single. Kathryn Schmierer (Racine, WI/Racine Lutheran) pitched a complete-game shutout for the Broncs.

Against UT Arlington, the Broncs took a 1-0 lead in the second on Amanda Cooper's (Huntsville, TX/Huntsville) RBI single to score Burroughs and Rider led for six innings. But down to their final out, the Mavericks got a two-out solo home run to send the game to extra innings. With the international tiebreaker in place, the Broncs couldn't bring the run home in the eighth. Rider got the first out of the inning on a UTA sacrifice bunt and recorded the second with a popout. But the Mavericks were able to get a two-out, walk-off single to take the win.
