LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – Saint Joseph's defeated the Rider University men's tennis team, 7-0, Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Broncs fall to 0-10, while the Hawks are now 6-11.
Playing with just five players, the Broncs started the match down a point and up against it in doubles, having to win both remaining matches in order to avoid a 2-0 deficit. Rider was unable to turn the trick. However,
Griffin Clark (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township) and
Lysander Payano Almonte (New Brunswick, NJ/Colegio Quusquey/Rockland C.C.) were very competitive at No. 2, forcing a tie-breaker with Peter DeWitt and Luis Janko before falling, 7-6 (3).
Clark continued to push Janko at No. 4 singles, but fell, 7-6, 6-1. Payano Almonte also played a close match with Tim Stierle at No. 1, but was defeated, 6-3, 6-3.
Diego Delgado (Lara, Venezuela/Colegio Rioclaro) also pushed Andre Fick at No. 2, but fell, 6-1, 6-3.
"Great matches today," said Rider Head Coach Doug Potkay. "We came out playing aggressive at the net in doubles and steadier at the baselines in singles."
Following the postponement of Sunday's regularly-scheduled match vs. Monmouth, the Broncs will return to action Tuesday, when they play host to Quinnipiac. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
